Abstract

« We report a forced-choice precognition study using a protocol designed to enhance psi effects in participants. We compare results from two selected participant populations: a cohort of experienced meditators and a cohort self-selected by the mere interest to participate in the study. To facilitate participation and avoid geographical limitations to cohort selection, an Internet-based experimental platform was developed to allow participants to complete sessions at home using software installed on their personal computers. We call the platform Psi@Home. For the current study, participants completed multiple sessions, each consisting of 20 forced-choice trials. Participants freely initiated and ended trials with a pair of keystrokes, after which an image or a blank would be presented as feedback, with the Null probability being 50%. Participants were instructed to hold an intention or volition for images, where seeing an image is considered a “hit” and a blank feedback a “miss”. The pre-registered study set total of 80 sessions per cohort. Pre-registered hypotheses for each cohort predicted: 1) an increase of the variance of session hit rates, and 2) an increase of the total cohort hit rate. A fifth registered hypothesis predicted a significantly higher variance for the meditator cohort. The variance difference hypothesis was confirmed (p=.04), and the other four hypotheses did not surpass a p=.05 one-tailed significance level. However, preliminary data, whose collection was stipulated by the protocol, showed strong increases of session variance (p=.00005). The results are discussed in terms of state induction methods and participant selection for the enhancement of psi effects. »
